Choosing The Perfect Pet For Your Kids
Pets can bring great happiness to a home. So many individuals and families have an emotional attachment to their pet often they are considered a family member. Animals demonstrate that they have feeling and the more you care for them, the greater their loyalty. However, there is a small degree of risk involved when you have children and pets living in the same household.
Parents who are unsure about bringing a pet into the family should consider the following health risks that may be associated with common pets:
Allergies. Before choosing a pet, you may wish to talk to your GP or pediatrician to determine whether your child has any allergies that may be triggered by pets.
Bacteria. If your kids are below 5 years of age, it is advisable not to choose reptiles as pets as they can transmit salmonella bacteria.
Intestinal parasites. Some of the most common parasites carried by cats and dogs are whipworms, roundworms and hookworms. So make sure that the your pets are properly treated/wormed regularly as these parasites can be transmitted to humans.
Psittacosis. Birds carry this disease and could be harmful to kids with immune system problems.
After considering all health factors, there are still a few more things that you need to consider before you start shopping for a pet.
Space for the pet
If your family is living in a small space, you may only be able to accommodate caged pets. If you have a larger space, you may choose a dog or a cat that would run and walk around the house with the rest of the family.
Budget
Taking care of a pet can be costly with food supplies, veterinary services, and grooming expenses. Make sure you can cover these expenses before acquiring a new furry friend.
Personality of your Child
Parents should select a pet that would suit their childs character and personality. Some kids are sensitive; others are mild-tempered, highly active and impulsive. As a parent, you would have a good idea of which pet would serve well as your childs friend and companion.
Pets are not toys. You have to instill this in your children so that they will care for the animals as they would for a friend. Also, your kids will learn a sense of responsibility at an early age by having a pet. But at the same time, children should care for their pet with your supervision and guidance.
